Course description:

This training takes participants through the standard of implementation and operation of P3O® (Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices).

The course is dedicated to all who:

  • take different roles in project and programme delivery and/or support business change portfolio management in their organizations
  • are willing to improve business change delivery effectiveness
  • are fascinated by such standards as PRINCE2, MSP, MoP
  • are looking for professional guidance on how to convince senior management about the need to use PRINCE2 MSP, MoP for governance
  • are looking for guidance how to establish such a governance avoiding many typical errors and failures
  • work in commonly called 'project offices' and would like to get familiar with P3O standard that may be helpful in ensuring high effectiveness of change initiatives delivery.

The lecture covers principles of getting value from change initiatives and the P3O role in complying with the principles.

P3O value for an organization is discussed:

  • “constitution” - by establishing standards and rules of portfolio, programme and project management
  • “police” - by pushing to follow the rules and progress monitoring
  • “support” - by providing direct support services given to portfolio, programmes and projects (professional services that P3O may provide are also presented).

The way P3O operates is described in the form of POTI model. In this model

  • P stands for processes
  • O for organization - set of roles and functions inside P3O along with a suitable office structure 
  • T comes from techniques and tools
  • I describes information flow needed to keep the governance integrated.

Several P3O models are demonstrated to suit the needs of small, medium and large organizations running different business activities. Criteria of deciding which model to implement is explained together with the suggestion what P3O service should be properly designed.

Finally comes the guidance on how P3O can be implemented within the organization. It is going to be step-by-step evolution change so the best way is to apply a programme approach managed with MSP.
P3O programme lifecycle is presented with suggestions on how to make it successful and not to fail because of typical errors. The last module presents temporary P3O lifecycle, which is an explanation of the way temporary programme and project offices may support programmes and projects.

The course includes a syllabus required to pass P3O® Foundation examination.
The exam consists of 50 multi-choice test questions and takes 40 minutes. You need to achieve at least 30 points to pass.



The training is targeted to provide profound knowledge of the way Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices operate and how they are implemented. After the training candidates would be able to pass the Foundation level exam and would be effective in establishing the governance of business change in their organization.

No initial requirements.
Some knowledge of project, programme and portfolio management as well as understanding PRINCE2® and MSP® will be helpful in mastering the course material.

Duration: 3 days

Exam preparation:

  • 3 full samples of Foundation exams
  • Foundation level questions after each module of the course.
