Best Practices & Guidelines

Projects can be managed intuitively, using common sense and logical thinking. In this way most people can handle smaller scale projects. Yet, not uncommonly they end up ‘reinventing’ the wheel’, through trial and error reaching solutions that have already been worked out – and what’s important – that have been published. These tried and tested methods are called Best Practices. They’re described in many publications, and cover techniques most often used during project management, considered to be useful and validated by generations of project managers.

Project Management Institute (PMI)®

PMI Registered Education Provider

One of the best compilations of Best Practice is the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). This bank of knowledge is run by the American based Project Management Institute (PMI). It’s a highly developed compendium of knowledge about project management. The techniques and principles described by the PMBOK® Guide are universal and applicable to most projects and lend themselves easily to use by junior project managers and experienced managers alike. The set of Best Practices are reliable techniques and guides that can and should be used to augment managers’ personal management styles. These Best Practices can also be used to develop a manager’s personal set of project management tools. All the skills that a project manager needs to be successful are covered by Best Practices. These include ‘soft’ skills, ie. those of interpersonal qualities and stress management, as opposed to ‘hard’ skills such as building timetables or change management in a project.
